AFI DOCS 2016 ANNOUNCES DATES AND CALL FOR ENTRIES
14th Annual Documentary Festival Will Bring Together
Filmmakers and Our Nation’s Leaders
June 22–26, 2016
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, October 16, 2015, Los Angeles, CA — The American Film Institute’s (AFI) documentary film festival, AFI DOCS 2016, will take place in the nation’s capital June 22–26, 2016. Entries are now being accepted and filmmakers are invited to submit feature and short documentaries at AFI.com/AFIDOCS or through Withoutabox.com. AFI DOCS presents a diverse slate of documentaries from around the world that convenes filmmakers with policymakers and opinion leaders in Washington, DC. The 14th edition of AFI DOCS will have three submission date deadlines — early, regular and late — for both short films (40 minutes and under) and feature films. December 4, 2015: Early submission
February 5, 2016: Regular submission
March 4, 2016: Late submission
In 2015, AFI DOCS presented 81 films from 25 countries. Among the films were BEST OF ENEMIES (DIRS Morgan Neville and Robert Gordon); LISTEN TO ME MARLON (DIR Stevan Riley); THE LOOK OF SILENCE (DIR Joshua Oppenheimer); MAVIS! (DIR Jessica Edwards); STEVE JOBS: THE MAN IN THE MACHINE (DIR Alex Gibney); WHAT HAPPENED, MISS SIMONE? (DIR Liz Garbus); and THE WOLFPACK (DIR Crystal Moselle). Among last year’s attendees were some of America’s greatest documentary filmmakers, including Alex Gibney, Barbara Kopple and Morgan Neville. Stanley Nelson, whose film THE BLACK PANTHERS: VANGUARD OF THE REVOLUTION also screened, was the AFI DOCS 2015 Guggenheim honoree. National leaders in attendance included White House Cabinet Secretary and Chair of My Brother’s Keeper Task Force Broderick Johnson, U.S. Representative Steve Cohen, U.S. Representative Ted Lieu, civil rights leader Julian Bond and Federal Communications Commission Commissioner Mignon Clyburn. Global leaders at AFI DOCS 2015 included Ambassadors of Kuwait, Jordan and Lebanon.
